How Portionary rounds

Spoons and cups

Each volume is rewritten with the fewest measures you own: ⅛, ¼, ½, ¾ tsp; whole or ½ tbsp; ¼, ⅓, ½, ⅔, ¾ cup. A result marked ≈ was rounded to the nearest measure, and the exact amount is shown underneath.

Eggs and whole items

Nobody cracks 1½ eggs. You get a suggestion such as 2 small eggs, or 1 large egg plus 1 yolk, with the exact weight (a large egg is about 50 g out of the shell). Garlic rounds up, cans are bought whole, and items typed without a unit, like “2 lemons”, are counted too.

Eggs set the structure of cakes, custards and breads. For baking, weigh the beaten egg.

What not to scale blindly

  • Time and temperature. Keep the oven temperature and check doneness early.
  • Pan size. Twice the batter needs a pan with about twice the area, not twice the depth. Compare two pans to get the exact multiplier.
  • Salt, spice and leavening. When tripling or more, start with a little less and adjust.

Kitchen unit converter

Convert volume to volume or weight to weight. Cups never turn straight into grams, because a cup of flour and a cup of sugar weigh different amounts.

For grams per cup of a specific ingredient, use the cups to grams chart: 58 ingredients, each sourced to USDA FoodData Central.

Questions cooks ask

How do I scale a recipe?

Enter how many servings the recipe makes and how many you need, or tap a multiplier such as 2×. Type or paste the ingredients. Portionary multiplies every amount by the servings ratio and shows the result next to each line.

Can I use fractions in ingredient amounts?

Yes. Enter 1/2, 1 1/2, 1½, 0.5 or a whole number. Results use measures you can scoop: 3 tsp is shown as 1 tbsp, 16 tbsp as 1 cup, and the exact amount stays underneath.

What happens to 1½ eggs?

Eggs, garlic cloves, cans and other whole items get a practical suggestion, for example 2 small eggs or 1 large egg plus 1 yolk, with the exact weight of beaten egg. Eggs affect structure in baking, so weigh them for cakes and breads. The shopping list rounds whole items up.

Should I scale cooking time too?

No automatic cooking-time rule is reliable. Pan size, depth, oven load, and the recipe itself affect cooking time. Check the food as it cooks.

Does my recipe get uploaded?

No. Scaling runs in this browser and the recipe you are editing is saved only in this browser's local storage. Optional analytics, only if you allow it, counts page visits and button actions, never ingredients.
